Agreed. I also don't understand how the parole system, implemented by the state, can sustain if the state then rejects its' findings. Were the Tate/LaBianca killings extremely heinous? Yes. Were they designed to create a war, what we would deem terrorism today? Absolutely. Did the killers act abominably during their trial? Of course. But the state's parole board has created a system to deem whether an individual has been rehabilitated, is no longer a threat, no longer serves as a warning to others, and merits their freedom. Why can't it be respected? Leslie Van Houten isn't Tex Watson or even, frankly, Patricia Krenwinkel. She should be judged on her own merits, not those of her codefendants or even their puppetmaster.
